Solemn Shelter
Year: 2022
Medium: Digital Photography

This photograph, adapted from the Voices of History: Jeju project, represents a pivotal aspect of a three-year interactive journey dedicated to exploration and education regarding the history of the Jeju 4.3 uprising. Situated on Jeju Island, South Korea, the cemetery featured in this image serves as a Solemn Shelter for the soldiers, officials, and numerous others who sacrificed during the Jeju 4.3 uprising. Concerning this frequently forgotten and untold historical event, I aim to share this photograph to encourage others to acknowledge its deep significance in South Korea's history.

Light Painting
Year: 2021
Medium: Digital Photography

This photograph, taken in Jeju Island, South Korea, was part of my experiment with long-exposure photography and the use of flash to produce the fascinating technique known as light painting, influenced by Pablo Picasso. My light painting is saturated with my name in Korean, "지우" (Jiwoo), positioned in the center. The border of the word is adorned with an abstract design illustrating my complex emotions, happiness, and despair. This complicated emotion recalls a chapter in my life, my time on Jeju Island. Starting my sixth-grade year, I attended an international boarding school for two formative years. This period was transformative, marked by the challenges faced with being separated from my family and thrown into an entirely different environment. Jeju island left a big impact on my life, leaving enduring memories. Through this expressive work, I aim to convey the emotions and experiences of this meaningful chapter of my life.

Mundane Life
Year: 2023
Medium: Color Negative Film

Mundane Life is a collage of three photographs purposely woven into a single work. These photographs were all captured using an analog film camera with Portra 800 color negative film. On the left, two photos capture unembellished moments, embracing the ordinary sense of everyday life and emphasizing its repetitive nature. On the right, a contrasting moment is captured from the New England Aquarium in Boston, portraying the endless movement of aquatic life within the confines of a glass tank. This composition, made through the medium of collage, serves as a platform to compare, contrast, and explore different realms of existence. Through this creation, I aimed to question conventional perceptions of the mundane, encouraging viewers to reevaluate and discover the profound beauty hidden within the mundanity of our daily lives.

Solargraph
Year: 2023
Medium: Pinhole Camera made with Can & Photographic Paper

This solargraph was taken with a self-made pinhole camera from September 6, 2023, to October 20, 2023. This powerful tool, made of a can with a small aperture and light-sensitive photographic paper, connects me to the sun. Positioned on the campus of my school, it recorded the daily passage of the sun, producing a visual narrative that spanned weeks—a movement of light and shadow, a witness to the passage of time. Pinhole photography, with its roots in the darkroom, resonates strongly with my passion and dedication to art, especially in photography. It mirrors my artistic journey from challenges and uncertainty to illumination through self-expression. As the pinhole camera survived the unpredictability of the weather, it symbolizes the resilience required to remain steady on my chosen path, a reflection of my dedication to art and a reminder of its value despite life's challenges and doubts.
